The Weare Conservation Commission By-Laws

We meet the second Wednesday of each month in the Town Offices conference room @ 7:00pm. Our meetings are usually televised live on the Weare local access cable channel (Channel 6). We have many ideas we would like to develop and need dedicated people to assist us. Our goal is to assure that Weare's future includes areas where we can hike, hunt, fish, observe wildlife, bike, and trail ride responsibly. You can help by volunteering as an active or alternate member, sub-committee member, or land monitor. If you are a property owner interested in securing a parcel of land in conservation, please feel free to contact us. We can advise you regarding alternatives including easements, sale, and donation.

We invite all to come to a meeting or contact a member to share your ideas and/or concerns.

History

The State of New Hampshire gave towns the right to form conservation commissions in legislation signed into law in 1963 by Governor John King. According to the enabling law (New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated 36-A), "A city or town...may establish conservation commission...for the proper utilization and protection of the natural resources and for protection of the watershed resources of said city or town." The Town of Weare voted to establish the Weare Conservation Commission (WCC) in 1967 to act as advisors assisting the other town boards, developers, and landowners in the protection of natural resources and habitat.

What We Do

The Weare Conservation Commission (WCC) provides the following services to the Town.

  • The WCC evaluates development plans and proposals to encourage environmental responsibility and sensitivity in development;

  • The WCC provides recommendations to the Weare Planning Board regarding minimizing environmental impact of proposed developments based on pre-review of plans for wetlands delineation, applicable environmental setbacks, etc.;

  • The WCC reviews state wetland permit applications and provides recommendations to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services Wetlands Bureau;

  • The WCC identifies areas to be maintained as town open space;

  • The WCC maintains existing town conservation lands and easements by regularly walking the boundaries and interior trails to ensure responsible protected-lands stewardship; and

  • The WCC manages the Weare conservation fund, which receives deposits when land is taken out of the current use program, to promote conservation of open space for wildlife habitat and responsible recreational use.

Mission

The Weare Conservation Commission is committed to pursuing the following goals:

  1. To assure that open land areas are available for all Weare residents for respectful and courteous recreational use.

  2. To assure that open land areas are available for the maintenance and protection of natural habitat critical to wildlife preservation.

  3. To link existing protected land by obtaining conservation land or easements to protect wildlife corridors.

  4. To provide responsible stewardship of the Town's Conservation Fund to achieve the aforementioned goals.

  5. To support the Town of Weare Planning Board by making technically sound recommendations and comments related to the protection of wildlife corridors and unique habitats, watershed concerns, and other natural resource areas important to the long-term interests of our town.

  6. To work with other town boards, commissions and committees to balance development with conservation consistent with Town regulations and the Town Master Plan.

  7. To offer educational resources related to local lands and conservation to all Weare residents.

Please contact us with any comments or questions you may have regarding the mission of the Weare Conservation Commission. We welcome your thoughts and rely on your continued involvement.
